ExPress® Soybean Meal Beats Crude Coconut Oil in Nutritional Benefits

soy or coconut oil

Crude coconut oil is widely used in livestock and poultry feeds as a major source of energy. Its price/kg increased substantially over the year due to its demand. The current price in the Philippines is $2.02/k ($0.92/lb). In the situation whereby the cost of energy is too much of a burden, producers of meat, milk and eggs are scrambling to find an alternative source of energy.

Extruded Soybean Meal, commonly called “Full-fat” soy, is one of the world’s most nutrient-dense foods, containing 36% protein, 18% oil and all essential amino acids. Soybeans cannot be fed raw because of anti-nutritional factors, like trypsin inhibitors, urease and lectins that adversely affect digestive efficiency.  This means soybeans must be processed to destroy growth inhibitors, deactivate fat oxidative enzymes, denature protein, free oil by rupturing plant cell walls and reduce raw & bitter flavors.

There are several ways of processing soybeans, but it is important to note that not all processing methods create the same nutrient dense product. The method that is the most efficient and produces the highest quality ingredient is the High-Shear Dry Extrusion Process by Insta-Pro Intl. The process begins with soybeans ground to enlarge the surface area and improve efficiency. Pressure and friction generated in the extruder creates the high-temperature environment that, in under 20 seconds, cooks, expands and stabilizes the product; this is the key difference in processing with an Insta-Pro extruder vs other mechanical companies.  If you look under a microscope, you will see the cell walls have been ruptured allowing the animal to absorb all of the nutrients.  Other methods do not do this.  The other key differences with the Insta-Pro method are it is a cost-efficient, energy efficient method that is simple to use.

Full-fat soybean meal is an excellent source of energy to replace crude coconut oil in the livestock and poultry diets. Not only is Full-fat soymeal more cost efficient, but livestock, such as swine, prefer it. Full-fat soy contains highly digestible protein and amino acids. It has long shelf life due to the presence of natural Tocopherols, and a source of Choline and high quality of Linoleic Acid.

The product is highly palatable and widely used in the swine diet – gestating, lactating, booster, pre-starter and starter diets. For example, nutritionists use Full-fat soy to improve growth rate and feed efficiency of growing pigs and to support milk production of lactating sows especially during summer season when the temperature goes up to 35C (95F) and the feed intake of sows decrease.
